The Rockland Bog is a hidden gem of hiking and biking trails that meander through forested wetlands, rivers, and woodlands in the largest peatland bog in the Midcoast.
The Georges Highland Path (GHP) is accessible from both a northern parking lot off Route 90 at Johanson Boats and a southern entrance off Beechwood Street (new in 2025). This 7-mile trail climbs over hills, runs along rivers, and crosses through timber stands and past a glacial erratic. Mountain bikers enjoy the trail for its variety and challenges.
Be aware of the weather and come prepared! The trail is often wet with rocks and some steep inclines. The Rockland Bog contains both active and abandoned logging roads, so be careful to stay on the blue blazes of the GHP as you traverse this landscape. From Route 90, after three miles on the GHP, you will hit a network of trails within our Rockland Bog Preserve that lead to our southern parking lot off Beechwood Street. From here, you can travel via the GHP to GRLT’s Jack Baker Woods Preserve and, further along, the Thomaston Town Forest.
