About the Preserve

Haystack Mountain, straddling the towns of Liberty and Montville, offers two routes to a spectacular summit with views of Trues Pond and Kingdom Bog. Wild blueberries dot the rocky landscape, and a local blueberry harvester farms the eastern fields in the late summer. This 58-acre property was conserved thanks to the grassroots efforts of Friends of Haystack Mountain with Midcoast Conservancy as their fiscal sponsor and early involvement from Georges River Land Trust. Today, the land is managed to maintain the scenic views, keep the access trail open, and allow local commercial blueberry operations to continue. If you visit in July, the rest of the mountain is open for free blueberry picking whenever you arrive!

Preserve History
Haystack Mountain had been used as a community trail for decades while under the ownership of Allen’s Blueberries until 2021 when they closed operations on the mountain and listed the property for sale. A local community group, Friends of Haystack Mountain, quickly formed to protect it. Through the help of the Land for Maine’s Future program, Midcoast Conservancy, private foundations, and hundreds of individual donations the property was conserved in 2025. That summer, the property, which sits half a mile from the headwaters of the St. George River was transferred to Georges River Land Trust for long-term stewardship and protection.
