At Georges River Land Trust, we conserve and care for the Georges River watershed. For nearly 40 years, we have worked with community members throughout the 19 towns in our service area to protect over 5,000 acres of land across 21 preserves. We also manage over 70 miles of hiking trails and 56 conservation easements. We offer year-round public access, recreation opportunities, and nature-based education across the lands we steward.
Position Summary:
GRLT utilizes a Co-Executive Director (Co-ED) leadership model with two positions: one focused on finance and operations, and one focused on partnerships and development. Together, they are jointly responsible for the overall leadership and management of the organization, ensuring GRLT adheres to governance and conservation best practices. As a team, the Co-EDs determine GRLT’s strategic priorities, operational plans and policies, and guide our outstanding staff to ensure GRLT’s overall success.
In this position, you will focus on stakeholder engagement, outreach, external communication, and strategic partnerships. As the organization’s primary storyteller, fundraiser, and partner builder, you will lead GRLT’s fundraising activities. You will work closely with your co-ED and the Board to develop and execute a compelling vision, and you will take the lead inspiring and motivating community stakeholders and the public at-large to support our goals and priorities.
Internally, you will support and manage GRLT’s Community Engagement Manager, Director of Langlais Art Preserve, and our forthcoming Development Manager. You will report to the Board of Directors and work closely with certain Board committees. In partnership with your co-ED, this collaborative, inclusive leadership approach will enrich our supportive team culture.
Key Responsibilities:
● Build and maintain strong relationships with key partners including donors, volunteers, community organizations, foundations and other grant resources, town and state government leaders, and other conservation organizations
● Be the primary spokesperson for GRLT to members, the community, and the media
● Build upon our positive, inclusive organizational culture that encourages collaboration and innovation
● Plan and execute fundraising efforts including anticipated capital campaigns
● Develop and oversee multi-year and annual work plans with metrics Qualifications:
● Demonstrated ability to create a compelling vision and successfully execute it
● Skilled storyteller and public speaker, passionate environmentalist, exceptional writing skills, collaborative leadership style, and experience working with a Board of Directors
● Experience supervising staff
● Bachelor’s or advanced degree in relevant field, or equivalent in work experience
● 5+ years of organizational leadership and fundraising experience, preferably at a senior level and in nonprofits
● Strong technical proficiencies with computer software, including but not limited to Meta Business, Microsoft Office, Google Office. Experience with our CRM, Little Green Light, is a plus
● A connection to Maine would be advantageous
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
This position is subject to activities beyond the typical indoor office professional setting. Physical capabilities include standing, bending, walking, and lifting. Must be able to spend time outdoors in variable weather conditions and terrain. Travel is required to various locations in the region.

Primary Roles:
1. Be the organization’s primary grant officer
2. Develop engaging and impactful strategies to retain and grow our membership
3. Lead our fundraising innovation and efforts to diversify our revenue streams
Primary Responsibilities:
● Drive Fundraising Innovation: Develop long-term strategies to build and diversify revenue streams, including major gifts, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, annual and planned giving, and signature fundraising events.
● Inspire and Cultivate Relationships: Build meaningful connections with donors, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, and foster an environment where supporters feel deeply engaged with Georges River Land Trust’s mission.
● Lead Donor Engagement: Oversee stewardship, recognition, and major donor programs, crafting compelling cases for support that inspire renewed and increased giving.
● Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with our Co-Directors and our Board of Directors to set strategic goals, actionable timelines, communicate progress, and support Board and staff to advance their fundraising efforts. Coordinate with the Community Engagement Manager to craft targeted content for donors members and supporters.
● Advance Our Institutional Giving: Research, identify, and secure restricted and unrestricted grants, maintaining a strategic calendar of opportunities.
● Oversee Development Operations: Ensure Little Green Light integrity, manage development budgets. Track key fundraising metrics, including donor acquisition, retention, and engagement.
● Elevate Events and Campaigns: Lead successful fundraising and cultivation events and create unique opportunities for donor engagement.
● Foster a Culture of Collaboration: Build lasting relationships with a broad network of philanthropists, corporate leaders, foundation officers, artists, Board members, and community stakeholders, all whilst communicating Georges River Land Trust’s mission, values, and vision with clarity and enthusiasm.
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
● Experienced, impactful fundraiser with at least three years or more experience securing and managing multiple fundraising streams, ideally over $500,000 per year.
● Understanding of nonprofit governance and fundraising principles, including annual, major, and planned giving, as well as event planning, marketing, and communications.
● Exceptional communicator who is professional, positive, proactive, and inclusive.
● Skilled storyteller who knows how to engage and inspire diverse audiences in-person and online.
● Compelling content creator who knows how to write content and create (or source) multimedia with broad appeal; ideally to support mission-driven nonprofits.
● Dynamic community builder who excels at purpose-driven community outreach and organizing.
● Event enhancer who has a proven track record of designing, implementing, and supporting successful in-person events.
● Results-driven leader with management experience who is strategic and ambitious, but also passionate for completing projects, meeting deadlines, and supporting direct reports.
● Data-minded content creator who leverages technology to analyze online metrics to develop data-driven decisions.
● Reliable and resilient colleague who is appropriate, considerate, collaborative, timely, and efficient.
● Volunteer recruiter who knows how to invite, support, retain, and celebrate volunteers.
● Passionate environmentalist with familiarity of environmental issues and a great desire to keep learning in order to best advance nature conservation and nature-based climate solutions.
Desired education and experience
● Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Communications, Marketing, or a related field, with at least three years of related work experience. Track record of designing and leading successful fundraising efforts to increase awareness and inspire action. Experience working in conservation is a plus.
Required qualifications
● Technical: Strong technical proficiencies with computer software necessary to conduct the duties of the position, including but not limited to Meta Business, Microsoft Office, and Google Office, and smartphone applications.
● Travel: Our office is located in Rockland, Maine, but our work spans across 19 communities throughout Midcoast Maine. Consequently, this position will require significant travel via your own car (with your own valid driver’s license and evidence of insurance). Travel via your own vehicle and you will be compensated for work-related mileage.
● Time: Ability to work some evening and weekend hours to support work-related events.
