Stephen Porter has created sculptures for more than 60 years, and he exhibits nationwide. He designs his
elegant abstract stainless steel, wood, and granite pieces in his studios in a custom designed post-and-beam barn in Searsmont. A member of a family of well-known artists, Stephen explores the pure language of geometrics in his art, which is characterized by carefully balanced design and meticulous craftsmanship. Scale runs the gamut from small tabletop pieces to large outdoor architectural installations.
Visit his studios and see how his sculptures move from computer renderings or small models to finished work. Following the demonstration of his artistic process join the artist and his wife in their nineteenth-century house for drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
Hosts: Stephen and Marcie Porter

It is hard to make an unattractive picture of the Maine landscape. Beautiful natural settings, quintessential fishing and farming vistas, picturesque towns – the raw material for great, iconic images. If you love outdoor photography, this four-hour workshop led by Margot Kelley, a former photography instructor at the Art Institute of Boston, is for you. Explore techniques that photographers use to focus on subjects of interest, then move out into the landscape to make pictures.
Finally, on the shore of South Thomaston’s harbor, where the ocean at high tide feeds the marsh, you will be provided a country lunch at picnic tables while you will discuss what you photographed and the stories in each picture. Bring a digital camera (or a cell phone), water and a notepad.
Facilitator: Margot Kelley

Blue Water Fine Arts, the walls are hung with the paintings of Barbara Ernst Prey. Barbara, whose paintings hang in many museums and private collections, will host a gathering on the upper back deck, overlooking Port Clyde harbor. Come to take in the sunset views over the harbor, enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres, meet the artist and listen to a short gallery talk about how the landscapes of our area inspire her.

The celebration will combine food, beverages and a reenactment of the historical novel Come Spring. The setting will be Richard and Cherry Lee’s farm in Warren on beautiful White Oak pond on the St. Georges River.
The food portion of the event will include colonial dishes, hearty and robust, all in keeping with the historical theme. Vegetarian and other alternatives can be provided. But the moments to savor will be the Come Spring Chronicle Player’s readings from the novel. Locals Vicki Harriman and Peter Duffey, together with their cast, will present readings and reenactments from Come Spring, the beloved novel of the first founders of Union, Maine. This will be the troupe’s seventh performance, and earlier shows received much acclaim.
The fall weather will be wonderful, the stews savory and entertainment lively. Much of the event, weather permitting, will be outdoors, so dress appropriately.

Elmer Savage, of
Savage Oakes Winery, began farming in Union in 1985 along with his parents. In 2000, he and Holly purchased the 95-acre farm from his parents and began planning for the future. The farm’s blueberry fields offered great potential, but just growing blueberries was not enough, so they began to explore making blueberry wine. This led them to think about other types of wine, and in 2002 they planted the first two acres of their vineyard. The vineyard has since expanded to nearly four acres with ten varieties of grapes. Their winemaking grew from hobby level to small scale commercial production and 2012 marked their eighth vintage.
The Savages invite guests to their vineyard for a unique wine tasting experience. After a tour of the vineyard, grapes from their own vines will be sampled followed by the wine made using that grape or blend of grapes. The wine tasting will be enhanced by delicious hors d’oeuvres from The Badger Café and Pub in Union.
Hosts: Elmer and Holly Savage, Savage Oakes Winery; Christy and Michael Badger, The Badger Café and Pub
