He learned the environment was much larger and important than he imagined, an ever-changing community with thousands of organisms leading complex lives right under his nose. Seasons of hard fieldwork, taught him that the best way to understand the environment is to experience it, and when he was introduced to community conservation through Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Maine Conservation Corps, he was shown a method that could introduce others to this world.
When his term as an Environmental Steward ended, Matt was given the chance to join Georges River Land Trust and work to help others experience and respect the natural world he cares so much about. He knows that if his generation does not succeed in conserving the world’s disappearing wilderness, then the next generation might not get the chance.
