Getting to Know Us Film Festival

October 26, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

A consortium of six midcoast Maine nonprofits will host the first ever “Getting to Know Us” film screening free to the public at The Strand in Rockland. Each institution culvert1has created a short documentary film that highlights people making a difference in our community. The purpose for hosting this event is to allow people to imagine how they can follow their passions to effect change with the support of the various local nonprofits and to inform the public about the variety of organizations serving our community.

For the Land Trust, it began with an impacted culvert on Jam Brook in the upper reaches of the watershed where native brook trout spawn and feed in cool deep waters. In 2012, a local fisherman and member of Georges River Trout Unlimited, Dan Daly, recognized that an improperly placed culvert was preventing passage of fish to their spawning grounds. He began work to change it with the support of Trout Unlimited National, Georges River Land Trust and other state and federal organizations. We also saw that this story was important to tell, so the Land Trust contracted with local filmmaker Dana Rae Warren to capture the replacement of the hung culvert with an arched culvert in a film called “Culverted.”

There are many stories of individuals like Dan Daly taking action to follow their passion. We sought out other local nonprofits to share an evening of stories. The event at The Strand will include films about saving native lost languages, young people being transformed through hands-on science, adults finding voice as a powerful social change medium, young women being empowered to speak up, and youth learning about their neighbors who are less fortunate than themselves. The partnering organizations for this film festival include Speaking Place, Herring Gut, Midcoast Community Chorus, Maine Women’s Fund and Farnsworth Art Museum, Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists.

After the screening of the films, spokespersons from the nonprofits will answer questions about the projects depicted in the films and their organizations in general.
