Loons and Brews!
June 27 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
If you’ve been to one of Maine’s many lakes on a spring or summer evening, you’ve probably heard the mournful call of Maine’s iconic Common Loon. Maine Audubon works to conserve loons through their Maine Loon Project, and 2018 marked the 35th year that volunteers have been participating in the annual Maine Loon Count. For three-and-a-half decades, dedicated volunteers have fanned out across the state to contribute to this important data-gathering event.
Tracy Hart, the Maine Loon Project coordinator, will talk about Common Loon natural history, conservation, citizen science, stewardship, threats, and ways to get involved in loon conservation. Join us at Lake St. George Brewing Company on Thursday, June 27 at 4 pm to learn about loon conservation and enjoy locally brewed craft beers.
Tracy joined Maine Audubon as a wildlife ecologist in 2019 where she works to conserve wildlife and habitat and engage the public in citizen science. This year she will assist thousands of Maine’s citizens in conducting the annual loon count, an event which tracks the status of Common Loon nesting populations in lakes throughout the southern half of the state. Tracy is also involved in the Loon Smart and Fish Lead Free Programs that promote citizen stewardship of common loons through landowner habitat protection and loon-friendly fishing practices.
