Lie Back, Look Up: Family Night Sky Viewing
October 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join amateur astronomer Pete Kalajian for a night under the stars on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 pm at the Good Neighbors Park on River Road in Cushing, right across from the Broad Cove Market/Fales Store. We will see what is shining bright with our naked eyes, but feel free to bring your binoculars and telescopes for a closer look. This is an experience that will spark a love for the stars in your children, and they will remember your stargazing sessions forever.
Kalajian is a science instructor at the Watershed School in Camden, and one of his passions is exploring the night sky. He is also the inventor of a specialized telescopic lighting device now used by star photographers all over the world. His invention, called the Flip-Flat, is considered the industry standard for photographers who shoot through a telescope to capture dazzling images of far-off galaxies and supernovas.
Please park on the road shoulder on River Road on the water side and we’ll convene in the field. You might consider downloading any number of night sky apps for your phone to use to explore the sky. Dress warmly and bring a blanket or chairs to relax and watch the stars. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Thursday, October 11.
This event is offered through a partnership with the Georges River Land Trust, Cushing Town Library, and the Cushing Community School. For more information, call 594-5166.
